Spatterdock beds remain throughout much of the upper portion of Silver Lake along the shoreline and the edge of the islands. However, the huge beds of past years have been eliminated by the dredging project. The invasive species phragmites and porcelain-berry are common along the water’s edge in many areas. The portion of the pond adjacent to the city park is fairly clear of vegetation with only a few small beds of spatterdock.
Silver Lake Description
Common carp and gizzard shad have remained the dominant fish species in this pond despite dredging activities (1985) which increased the water depth. Gizzard shad are considered a rough fish species; they compete with other fish for food and space but provide little food value due to their fast growth. Carp are sought after by some anglers and may be most readily taken during spring spawning activities by bow and arrow as well as hook and line. Largemouth bass numbers are fairly low. Most hang around the woody structure bordering the islands or along the few drop-offs. Some black crappie are available with moderate numbers of bluegill and yellow perch. An occasional redear sunfish has been taken from the pond. There is no boat access site at this pond, but a canoe or car-top boat may be carried to the pond. Limited shoreline access is provided along the southeastern corner of the pond in the City park although parking can by a problem. A fish ladder is present on the dam to provide access for river herring to the pond during the spring months. It is unlawful to fish within 10 feet of the entrance or exit of a fish ladder or remove fish from any ladder between March 15 and May 30.
