Allegheny Reservoir Description

The Allegheny Reservoir has a surface area of 12,000 acres, an average depth of around 45 feet and a maximum depth of around 130 feet. The Allegheny Reservoir was created for flood control, water reserves, hydropower generation and recreation. The Allegheny Reservoir is located in the Allegheny National Forest, which is one of the largest and most popular outdoor recreational areas in this part of the country. There is a Varity of actives that provide year-round outdoor enjoyment for the whole family. In the summer this includes Fishing, Swimming, Boating. In the winter months the focus shifts to ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling on the many trails and forest roads. The Allegheny Reservoir is managed primarily for Walleye fishing but there is also healthy populations of Northern Pike, Muskellunge, Smallmouth Bass, Brown Trout, Yellow Perch, and White Bass. The Pennsylvania state record for walleye and northern pike, and the New York state record for walleye and channel catfish have come from Allegheny Reservoir. Fishery habitat management programs are currently targeting Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Bluegill and Catfish in hopes of improving the production of these species. Some of the habitat projects taking place around the reservoir include sinking structures like porcupine cribs, catfish and bass nesting boxes and Christmas tree reefs in the reservoir. Many of these structures were placed around the Red Bridge area.
